Midan Talaat Harb, the heart of European Cairo, at dawn. In the nineteenth century Khedive Ismail, then ruler of Egypt, constructed a grand new city in immitation of Haussmann's Paris. Today many of the buildings have fallen into disrepair. (Simon Akam)
